Tread Lightly

What for this earth and sun and sea
If not to discern who we should be
To find solace in that farther shore
Understand the endless war
To find what never runs up dry
The source of truth, the source of lie
Perhaps to find and truly love
What lays veiled in the dark above

Should then our days be for an easy life
Hidden from rumblings of deeper strife
Hidden in such simple things
That wind and twist with subtle strings
That twist the mind, the soul, the heart
And tear the soul from limb to part
And then to leave a sorry shell
For our heaven then become a hell

Nay I say that is not for me
I choose life and love and liberty
Tread softly, I will, these sands of time
To leave no wake, no ties that bind
So when my days shall find their end
I may rise and with heaven blend
