Before Night Falls

It is late on these empty streets
But for the few who hurry on.
I walk alone.

I am not frightened by shadows
That rise and fall on brick walls
and in passing corners.
I see the light that brings
These apparitions into clear relief.
They do not haunt my walk.

My destination lies many blocks ahead
I keep my pace steady
I quicken my senses
To enjoy the evening
Before the dark night falls
And I can walk no more.
