A Little Thaw

Tangled in the snow and ice
Of a late February thaw
A trio, or perhaps a quartet,
Of song birds surprise
Greet with lovely two-toned melodies
Of different timbres and diminuendos

I wonder where they’ve hidden
Their voices in this wintry repose
Glad they’ve courage to sing
An ode to joy
In the bristling currents
Of these southern winds

Too soon yet
For the white and lavender crocuses
That leap to welcome
The first balmy spring breezes
But I join their impatience
To be rid of cold shadowy nights
And hearts aslumber

I thirst for the showers
That herald abundant greens
And for voices and songs
That wildly fill sleepy dawns
With rapturous desire
And awakened spirits
