Tears

Great tears roll down
The cheeks of my heart
As I hear you pack your car
Outside the back door

Opening and closing
With that double thump
Air exhaling, metal snapping shut

It is a sound
I’ll not hear again
Of your childhood
Of your high lilting voice
Exuberantly crying across the room
Of your expectant heart

How I long to wish you well
On your great journey of life
But in this moment
There are just tears
Rolling quietly down
My heart
