Push On

This narrow road
Of gravel and dust,
Of thinly strewn pines,
And brown copper rust

I travel past ruts
As they spread out and grow
Filled by the rain
By the sun and the snow

My limbs and my chest
Shudder and shake
Over these cracks
Over their quakes

Leaving me lost
Momentarily blind
Sun and stars tossed
In a jumble of time

I know the end
Of this rugged rough road
Is worth all the struggle,
Or so I’ve been told

But these moments of anguish
Over angles and drops
When life is a tangle
It’s so easy to stop

Push on, push on
Is the clear sounding cry
From the thrushes in branches
That sing from the sky
