Autumn Walk

A silver sheet of white
Lays atop the wide lagoon
A trick of reflected light
This lazy afternoon

The clouds blow in and blanket
The sun with coats of gray
The waters’ pewter currents
Do toss and turn and spray

I watch a great blue heron
Lift smoothly from the ground
All the world its wings
Unfolding and unbound

There’s a stirring in the shallows
Near the shore the other side
A gaggle of noisy wood ducks
Tuck and bob and slide

I have often wandered
These idle autumn groves
Breathing in the silence
And the harmony they grow

My life is nurtured and rejoices
In the spirit of these lands
Fed by lakes and rivers
Home to diverse clans

In a shared fraternal moment
With the cuckoos and the wrens
They search for summer’s harvest
I search for summer’s end
