If fair be this white lily in the sun
And grace fall gently from the bluebird’s wing
Then dimmer are they, and still both undone,
When your joy across the room lightly sings
Dark the gray night grows at midnight’s deep bell
Gloom sits shadows that rise and fall beyond
Quiet beats my heart for it cannot tell
If love’s true face to each our souls shall bond
Day and night stretch far then pass away
Your fond kiss so long and sweet haunts me still
A ghost that treads upon my lips and stays
My heart, tethered to its chains, takes its fill
Sweet lass if kindness in you moves and lives
Let what was, now pass, and with strength forgive
Note: My first sonnet. I’m not sure I’ve quite got the Iambic pentameter correct, but it was fun to work on it. I may come back to it over the next few days and see if I can refine the rhythm.
