Light We Need

In the dim and deceptive night
Moon reflecting slivers of light
Voices beckon and burden the air
Creasing it with sad despair

Cries resound throughout the glade
Mixed with sighs that rise and fade
I wonder at their lonely fates
And how the chorus falls and breaks

Out from their hidden lairs they stalk
Past leaves and stumps and gliding hawks
And cry their mournful tales at dark
For hope, for love, to seek, to mark

So much life is hid from view
Like this enigma that’s me and you
When the voices of the night recede
The light will rise, the light we need
