Night is Blue

The sky is bruised black and blue
But bleeds red with thoughts of you
A dog cries at noises in the night
Sleep quarrels like some cat fight

A motor churns in distant skies
I hear your words when I close my eyes
And like that plane has sped away
You’ve run from our din and fray

I’m sorry, love, for the words we said
For those missing tears I know you bled
If given the chance I’d turn back time
Rework those threads of our twisted line

Your closet’s bare and the towels half gone
No light in the east foreshadows dawn
The night is bitter in its blackest hour
My heart is blue and the coffee sour
